News from
Chris Eerden and Blend Winestore...
Hello [Customer_Name]
Drinking Habits I read a really interesting article recently, put out by the Silicon Valley Bank, which in the 1990's moved much of its lending to California wineries, rather than its traditional computer industry based clients.
The gist of the article is that the bank predicts an increase in fine wine consumption of between 11% - 15% in the United States for 2011. As one of the largest lenders to the wine industry in the US, they probably have a good handle on the situation.
With the expected gradual improvement in the global ecomomy would come job growth and improving consumer confidence with an increase in the consumption of luxury goods a natural assumption - with fine wine fitting into this category. Most wineries around the world have also decreased roduction of their top wines in recent times so any over-supply in this bracket that existed a few years ago is slowly being worked through, bringing demand closer to supply. There is no reason to expect general price increases in super premium wines but they may hold their prices more consistently than has been the case recently.
Similarly at the low to mid-priced level of wine we would not predict any increase in prices in the near future but you can probably expect the overall level of discounting to decrease. The heavy discounting over the last couple of years is simply not sustainable for wineries and we have seen the price of wine on the bulk markets firm considerably in the last 12 months.
Seeing the market get back to a sustainable level is a positive for consumers and the wine industry alike so it will be interesting to see if the Silicon Valley Bank really has it's finger on the pulse!

Gerard Bertrand Domaine de Villamajou Corbiers Boutenac 2008
Gerard Bertrand, like his father, worked at the family home of Domaine Villemajou while still at school, before pursuing a successful rugby career, eventually representing his country and captaining Stade Francaise, one of the leading clubs in France. At the end of his rugby career, Gerard returned to his roots and has become one of the leading winemakers in Languedoc. His wines show a clear link to the terroir of the vineyards and excellent winemaking. The vineyards are located along the Mediterranean coast in southern France and are grown on chalky soils. Low yields and a ruthless approach to quality control ae very evident. These are some of the best value wines in the Languedoc.
Domaine de Villemajou comprises 90 hectares of south facing vineyards in the terroir of Boutenac, the best area of the Corbières appellation. The varieties in this powerful and complex red are old Carignan (40%), Grenache (30%), Syrah (20%) and Mourvèdre (10%). Grapes are hand-harvested and the wine is aged in oak. An inviting purple-claret in colour. On the nose there are aromas of leather, dark plums and blackcurrant with floral, liquorice and lavender notes. Powerful and dense on the palate, packed with flavours of cassis and herbs. The finish is long, ripe and spicy. A very serious wine for a very reasonable price!
Our Price: $39.50 per bottle
$35.00 per bottle as part of any mixed six bottle purchase |
